CAGLIARI,
ITALY- Demolition specialists at Esplodem Service have
used explosives to demolish all eleven structures at Cementeria
Santa Gilla located along the southern coast of Sardinia.
The complex
was built piecemeal between 1919 and 1945, long before most
of the hotels and villas that now flourish along the beaches
of this exotic Mediterranean locale. 29-year blasting veteran
Erminio Giangregorio, along with his son, Fabio, developed
a detailed plan to fell the six 35 m-tall concrete silos,
three storage sheds and two-building processing complex over
a period of eight days.
Esplodem's
six-man team drilled more than 3,000 holes at critical support
points within the heavily-reinforced structures, and eventually
detonated a total of 167 kg of gelatin explosives. The project
was completed on time, with no reported problems from nearby
residents or retail businesses.
