IMPLOSION DOCUMENTARY TO AIR WEDNESDAY FEB 8th
A new one-hour
TV series called "The Blasters" will premier in the
US this Wednesday night, February 8th, at 8:00 pm (est) on the
Discovery Channel. The program represents the first continuous
"series" on structural blasting produced for network
television.
The program
profiles several of the world's most skilled blasting contractors
as they implode buildings around the globe. Segments for the
series were shot in Athens, Amman, Dublin and London, as well
as domestic blasts in North Carolina, Ohio and North Dakota.
The Blasters is unlike other documentary efforts in that it
follows several companies simultaneously, and represents a true
portrait of what blasters encounter when imploding large urban
structures. Unforeseen challenges such as security delays, technical
obstacles, and even the occasional structure that doesn't fall
down, are shown with accompanying insight provided by respective
contractors. (The segment featuring Twikenham Stadium in London
is particularly compelling, as blasters were in the midst of
loading explosives when terrorist bombs were detonated just
three miles away in the downtown district last July.)
What does
not appear in the program are any contractors making
the usual absurd claims of having "invented the industry"
and other embellished "first family of this or that"
nonsense that has marginalized many blasting programs in recent
decades. Implosionworld.com took an active role as a consultant
on this series, which aspires to lead by example in showing
that blasting programs don't have to lie or mislead viewers
to be entertaining.
The Blasters
premiers February 6th in the United Kingdom and February 23rd
in Canada. Premier dates for Discovery Europe, Discovery Asia
and Discovery Australia are scheduled but have not been publicly
announced.
In the United
States, several of the "Blaster" episodes will repeat
on Sunday afternoon February 26th at 2:00pm (est).
In other
blast programming news, a Modern Marvels episode airing on the
History Channel the same night & time (2/8 8pm) will profile
a hotel implosion in Clearwater, Florida, and a program on National
Geographic will feature a hotel implosion in Miami Beach on
February 23rd.

GUTS
& BOLTS
Another
year, another major sports stadium bites the dust. The
2004 victim is Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, USA,
and Guts & Bolts: Veterans Stadium Implosion,
is the official documentary program that followed Demolition
Dynamics Co. and Brandenburg Industrial Services for several
weeks prior to the dynamic duo bringing the 33 year-old
concrete octorad to its knees on March 21st. The 62-second
implosion sequence stands as the longest ever performed
for a single structure.
This
30-minute program is scheduled to air nationally in the
U.S. on The History Channel on Saturday, July 10th at
6:30pm est.
An
unusual view: This program contains implosion footage
captured by a special servo camera designed by Protec
Inc. (a sponsor of this site) that actually tracked the
blast completely around the inner perimeter of the structure
via remote control, then was swallowed into the debris.

DEMOLITION
SQUAD
A new six-part
documentary series titled Demolition Squad is scheduled
to air in various countries, including the United States, beginning
in June 2004.
Produced
over 10 months in 2003 by Granada-Bristol Ltd., the program
follows Yorkshire, UK-based Controlled Demolition Group Ltd.
(no relation to CDI-USA) as they demolish various skyscrapers,
smokestacks and loading cranes throughout the UK.
While the
US version may seem a bit over the top at times ("There's
no margin for error, they've only got one chance at it!!"
ugh), this otherwise well-produced program offers an informative
look at the engineering and public relations challenges on a
wide variety of projects. Also to its credit, the blast team
and producers stay true to the facts of each situation
something not often seen on American documentaries.
Demolition
Squad originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK last winter. Its
American debut is scheduled for June 16th on the National Geographic
Channel, followed by Canadian, Dutch and German broadcasts in
mid-July. (Click

HISTORY
CHANNEL TO AIR 'THE WRECKING BALL'
The
last in a long line of demolition documentaries to be
postponed by the events of 9/11 is scheduled to air this
week on The History Channel (November 11, 12 & 13,
2002).
While
implosionworld.com works hard to present the positive
attributes of any demolition-related endeavor, we can't
find many kind words for The Wrecking Ball, a grueling
two-hour hodgepodge of disjointed visual musings and intentional
misinformation. But don't let us sugarcoat it

HOW
STUFF WORKS
Fresh
off of their selection as Time Magazine's choice for "Best
Informational Website," Howstuffworks.com has archived
a thoroughly researched feature on How Building Implosions
Work.
The
interactive article, which was a collaborative effort
between howstuffworks.com writer Tom Harris, implosionworld.com's
Brent Blanchard and several other industry experts, has
been widely praised as one of the most comprehensive,
informative - and accurate - studies into what it takes
to "implode" a building.

JUNKYARD
WARS / SCRAP-HEAP CHALLENGE
Yet
another demolition-related TV program placed on hold
after the events of September 11th has received final
approval for broadcast.
The
season-finale' of The Learning Channel program Junkyard
Wars (also known in the United Kingdom as Scrap-Heap
Challenge) will be broadcast in the US as early
as March 2002, with the UK version airing shortly thereafter.
The
hour-long program features two teams of mechanics and
engineers competing within the confines of a junkyard
to construct items designed to perform a specific task.
In this episode, the teams build "demolition trucks"
that are judged by their ability to knock down large
concrete walls.
American
demolition specialist Ron Dokell is featured as the
program's guest commentator, and video clips of several
explosive demolition projects appear throughout the
program.

ULTIMATE-10
After
an 8-month hiatus due to the terrorist attacks of September
11th, production recently wrapped on an episode of the
popular Learning Channel series Ultimate-10 that
features various explosions and explosive demolition
projects.
In
July 2001, film crews accompanied blaster Eric Kelly
as he felled two 14-story apartment buildings in Philadelphia,
PA. The documentary was later suspended, however, in
the wake of the attacks on New York and Washington.
The
program is tentatively set to air in the United Kingdom
and other international markets in mid-2002. There is
no current release timetable in the United States.

DISCOVERY
UK FINISHES DETONATORS SERIES
The
Discovery Channel-UK recently finished location shooting
for the final installment of their 7-part series The Detonators.
The documentary segment will profile the explosive demolition
of a 600-foot 19th century viaduct completed by Coleman
& Company in March of this year.
An
interesting sub-plot: This rural demolition occurred during
the height of Englands recent hoof-and-mouth epidemic,
requiring unusual and extreme precautions.
The
program is scheduled air across Europe in August 2001,
and a US broadcast could occur later in the year.

NBC'S
DATELINE / DISCOVERY TO AIR DEMOLITION DOCUMENTARY
Dateline
/ Discovery News is currently producing a one-hour demolition
documentary that will feature the work of several internationally-renowned
blasting firms, and culminate with the demolition of the
Mir Space Station as scientists attempt to safely guide
it down to earth. The unusual documentary recently tracked
explosive demolition projects in Ohio, Missouri, Kansas
and Blackburn, England, as they endeavored to profile
a diverse cross-section of firms working in the structural
blasting industry. The program will also feature a look
back at several of the industry's most challenging projects
over the past few years.
This
documentary is tentatively scheduled to air on the United
States Discovery Channel March 9, 2001.

Productions is putting the finishing touches on a one-hour
documentary featuring the recent implosion of Three Rivers
Stadium in Pittsburgh. It is reported that the New York-based
production company struck a deal to be granted exclusive
access to the blast zone and an interview with the blaster.
The
air date for this program is tentatively set for Spring
2001.

IMPLOSION
TO BE FEATURED IN NEW BRAD PITT / ROBERT REDFORD MOVIE
Filming
is currently taking place in Casablanca, London and other
parts of the world for the action-thriller Spy Game,
starring Brad Pitt and Robert Redford.
The
$90 million film features a scene in which Brad Pitt's
character crosses paths with a suicide bomber. This past
January, Controlled Demolition Group, Yorkshire, UK was
contracted to demolish a 5-story apartment building for
the scene.
Director
Tony Scott's request was a little unusual; Because the
blast was supposedly the result of a terrorist act, CDG
Blaster Charles Moran was asked to bring down only the
front half of the structure in a jagged, somewhat serrated
fashion. After meticulous planning and preparation, the
blast was performed perfectly, and no damage was sustained
by adjacent structures located less than 40 feet away.
Spy
Game is scheduled for release in November 2001.

on February 9, 2001. The program will be broadcast in
the United States soon thereafter.
The
one-hour documentary will feature a variety of blasting
applications such as roadwork, quarries and mines. The
program finishes by tracking Tulsa Oklahoma-based Dykon
Blasting and Protec Documentation Services through the
implosion of the Commerce Center complex in St. Louis,
Missouri.

CBS-TV's
NASH BRIDGES FEATURES BUILDING IMPLOSION
Tired
of the same old implosion documentaries on TV? Well there's
an unusually 'entertaining' look at the industry airing
on November 23rd, 2000, when a new episode of Nash Bridges
features Don Johnson and Cheech Marin trapped in the basement
of a building as the demolition crew counts down.
Implosionworld.com
producers recently worked with Don Johnson Productions
in creating a surreal 'implosion' atmosphere set in Hollywood,
California (although the featured blast actually occurred
a few years ago in Galveston, Texas).
Implosion
aficionados will likely find several 'irregularities'
throughout the sequence, but it's all in the name of fun,
and the special effects are certainly worth checking out
(see below). Let us know what you think!
